Ah, the purse cake— ahem, the designer purse cake. We get calls almost weekly from people interested in having a purse specialty cake baked. Most calls to our Gainesville bakery are for birthdays, and sadly most people want them within 24 hours. This week, a great local business owner chose to celebrate her birthday in true designer style. Requesting a Louis Vuitton style, our birthday girl had one more request… Red Velvet. Now at Dream Day Cakes, we love baking Red Velvet cakes. From our cake truffles to specialty cakes, Red Velvet remains one of our most popular flavors. One exception — custom carved cakes.

For sculpted cakes, we generally like a very strong cake; such as gold or sponge. Red velvet cakes tend to be a little on the delicate side, and are very (very very) difficult to sculpt. Remember, our cakes taste even better than they look. We can’t substitute flavor for strength, and because of this… we rarely do red velvet sculpted cakes.

Fondant and Gumpaste Specialty Purse Cake

Of course, with every rule we have exceptions. It is our pleasure to present our exceptional Gainesville birthday cake of the week; the designer purse cake. This fondant specialty cake features our popular red velvet (of course) cake with classic vanilla buttercream filling. Layers and layers of cake and filling.

The cake was then covered in our hand-made fondant, adorned with gumpaste accessories, and decorated to resemble a designer handbag. Of course, our resident cake artist had to model the cake to see how it matched her outfit.
