Why it’s important to Buy Local this Holiday Season

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and like many of us, you’re probably making a list and checking it twice. Here’s why it’s important to look for your independent locally owned shops when spreading that Holiday cheer (aka Buy Local).

First, let me say thank you. At Dream Day Cakes®, we’ve had a great year; and we are extremely grateful to everyone that continues to help our little family bakery.

We are proud to be an Independent and Local business in Gainesville, Florida.

An independent business meaning that we a true licensed, tax-paying business locally owned in our community. We live in this same community. We hire people from our community.

We spend money in this same community.

When you patronize local, independently owned businesses (like Dream Day Cakes), more money stays in your local community.

Let’s look at an example. Let’s say you spent $100.00 at a local, independently owned business here in Gainesville, Florida. Of the $100.00, approximately $68.00 would stay in our community.

Remember, businesses are charged a higher rate on services (such as electricity, fire fees, taxes on rent, etc.) that help offset your costs.

Even better, most local, independently owned businesses do business with other local, independently owned businesses. It’s like the circle of life… only less music.

When you buy at a local “big box” chain store, only about $15 – 40.00 of that stays local – which is great. That $15 – 40.00 helps keep our community employed, costs down, etc.

When you buy from an online store (out of our community), approximately $0.00 returns to the community. This makes us sad.

The 3/50 Project (disclosure, we’re supporters), has a great proposition for you.

  1. Pick 3 Local, Independently owned stores in your community.
  2. Spend $50.00.
  3. Save your local community.

It’s a great idea.

This Holiday season, we’d love if you looked for independently owned, Local businesses for your Holiday needs. If not independently owned, local chain stores are a nice alternative.

If you’re going to shop online, well in these times you need to do what you need to do. We understand. We’ll also shamelessly plug our Big Fred Cookie which ships to any US address in 2 – 3 days at a fantastic price. 😉

3 stores. $50 bucks. Your community will thank you.
