Lately, we’ve been doing a lot of wedding cakes that weren’t wedding cakes.
A few months ago, a beautiful young bride walked into our bakery and said she hated cake. Not the greatest opening line, but I took this as a challenge.
I tried to be funny and said something like, “what do you tell the butcher?” Either it wasn’t funny or she didn’t get it… it was a little awkward there for a second.
Not deterred, I pressed on… “how can I help you?” We started a conversation. She was getting married and hated cake (like she said), but her mother told her that she absolutely had to have a cake at her wedding.
My exact response was: “That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard. Do you want me to call your mother?”
You see, I believe that it’s the bride’s wedding.
Traditions are important, don’t get me wrong. That being said, we side with the bride. Sometimes, it’s time for a new tradition. After all, if you hate cake, why spend good money on a wedding cake?
Of course, we learned that this bride loved cookies. This led to one of my favorite non-wedding cakes we’ve created— the cookie cake wedding cake. =) =)
Bottom line: Whether you’re choosing a planner, a baker, a photographer, or another professional to help you celebrate your day, make sure they remember that it’s your day.
