North Florida Regional Medical Center Cake

Dream Day Cakes helped celebrate the 40th anniversary of the North Florida Regional Medical Center (NFRMC) with an amazing replica of their hospital back in 1973 — as a hospital cake.

Gainesville, Florida certainly looked different in 1973; the first year it opened. New to the area, the hospital impressed with it’s size and quality of care.

The concept for this cake had our culinary team create a replica of the hospital from the original 1973 building. To accomplish this task, we used photos, archived aerial shots, newspapers, and more.

Some details, such as the rose garden, the hospital design, the pond, and making an accurate replica of the facility.

The entire cake used edible features in the design and construction of this cake. The posts holding the car port, the roses, and street lights were made with fondant and gum paste. The hospital itself featured an Almond cake with alternating layers of raspberry and soft chocolate buttercream.

Hospital Cake and Details

Sometimes, it’s not just the cake — it’s also the stories of why we’re making the cake. We often say that the story behind the cake is the most important piece of the puzzle. With that information, we can truly help create a memorable cake.

Silver Dollar Tradition

Back when the hospital opened, the facility would bake cakes with real Silver Dollars on the inside. If you received a piece with a Silver Dollar, it was considered a good thing and became very enjoyable for the staff.

Wanting to recreate this tradition, Dream Day Cakes created 450 mini-cupcakes each with a fondant silver dollar topper.

If you look closely, you’ll see we actually used a 1972 Silver Dollar…

Face Value: Delicious

As we said, it’s the little things. The 1973 Ike silver dollars were originally kept uncirculated and used for proof sets of that year; none were released for general circulation. So… in 1973, the silver dollars would have been 1972 or earlier. =)

We loved helping to celebrate 40 years of excellence from North Florida Regional Medical Center. Creating the replica hospital cake involved research, planning, and a lot of fun. It was an honor to be part of the celebration and here’s to another 40 years of serving the community!
