Uga (Georgia Mascot)

Many Gator fans aren’t on a first name basis with the University of Georgia mascot — I didn’t even know he had a name. As with most of our custom cakes, we learn from our research… and low and behold, meet Uga (pronounced Uh-guh).

For this birthday cake, our bakery recreated Uga in cake. We wanted to keep our cake readily identifiable and tried to include details important for the English bulldog, such as his spiked collar, wrinkled face, and pushed in nose.

Eat me. I dare you.

This bulldog cake helped celebrate a birthday here in the Gainesville, Florida area. From the ears to the pearly whites, every detail on this cake was completely edible.

Birthday cakes don’t need to be a flat, sheet style cake from your local supermarket. Instead of a frozen cake shipped to Gainesville, this birthday celebration enjoyed a freshly baked cake using the finest ingredients. Of course, this cake looked a little different than a supermarket cake, too.

Normally, we get requests for gators, UF colors, and your typical University of Florida themed cakes — after all, we bake cakes in Gainesville, Florida. Although this cake won’t change who we root for, we did love working on Uga.

Confucius said, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” I don’t know about that — days here at the bakery are very long, and it’s a lot of work. That being said, creating cakes like this Uga birthday cake put a big smile on our faces.

When we saw the reaction to receiving the cake, our smile grew even bigger. You know, Confucius was right.

The Nintendo NES (or Nintendo Entertainment System) entered this world in 1985— becoming the hottest thing since Cindy Crawford. Not only did the NES bring Super Mario Brothers to the masses, it also helped incredible graphics to the home market. Sure, it’s nothing compared to the game systems of today… but for the time, the NES certainly made for a sweet afternoon.

It’s a common scenario here at the bakery… Whether it’s paying for a cup of Joe or putting down a deposit on one of our amazing cakes, when we hand over the tablet and ask for a signature, we usually hear “Wow, that’s neat.”

You know, it is neat — but more importantly, it’s good for our business. At Dream Day Cakes^®, we use the Square card reader to accept credit card payments quickly and efficiently. Before we get into why we like Square for credit card processing, let’s talk about how credit card processing works. 

Let’s call this summary the Cliff’s Notes version of credit card processing. =)

In a nutshell, businesses (like Dream Day Cakes^®) pay credit card processing companies a percentage of every credit card sale. These fees include a flat percentage (generally 1.2 to 3.75%), a “per transaction” fee (anywhere from 0 – 25 cents), “gateway” fees, equipment fees, and more.

Getting confused yet?

It get’s even worse. At the end of the month, most of these credit card processors add surcharges and other fees. “The card that Joe used was a rewards card, so we’re going to charge an extra 1.2 percent.” “That card was a business card, it needs to be charged at another 1.3 percent.” So on, and so on, and so on.

Square is completely different.

The first reason we love Square? Honest pricing. Fred’s been working with credit card companies for over 20 years— Square is the first company that’s ever provided him honest pricing that has no hidden fees. With Square, you pay 2.75% for every swiped card. American Express? 2.75%. Discover? 2.75% Rewards Cards? 2.75%. There are no hidden fees, no gateway fees, no crazy fees whatsoever.

Even though we get a much better “rate” with other processors, at the end of the month, all of the additional fees add up to much higher than Square’s simple and honest 2.75% price model. No monthly fees. No minimums. Honest pricing = happy bakers.

Square pays us the next day. Automatically.

At our bakery, we love baking. We love creating amazing cakes, we love the smell of bread baking in the oven, the look of pastries covering the countertops. Know what we don’t love? We don’t love accounting. Knowing that we can reliably count on payments to be in our bank account the very next day makes our business run more efficiently.

Happy bakers = better cakes.

Honest pricing and next day payouts are just the tip of the iceberg. When we’re exhibiting at an expo, on a delivery, or at a show, Square allows us to accept payments directly from our phone (or tablet). We plug in the free card reader, swipe the card, and confirm the order. Simple, fast, and easy.

It get’s even better. We also can accept e-payments directly to our account using the Square card case. Customers coming to the bakery can pay us directly with their phone. No wallet? No problem. You can still get a cupcake and an espresso. =) =)

This cake featured (you guessed it) ladybugs from top to bottom. With adorable (and edible) motion paths, fun swirls, and fondant ladybugs, this Red Velvet cake almost needed a picnic basket for a cake stand. =)

Cowboy Birthday Cake

For this 1st birthday celebration, we created a two-tiered cowboy themed birthday cake. Complete with red bandana, badge, cowhide, and lasso, this cake showed cowboy roots from every angle.

The top tier of this birthday cake represented a cowboy’s signature jeans, complete with embroidered pocket (with the birthday boy’s name). A gold badge and red bandana adorn the top of the cake (edible, of course).

Gainesville, Florida may be a few day’s ride from the Ol’ West, but that can’t stop the celebration. For this cake, we transported our Gainesville bakery into the middle of cow country. =)

After discovering her husband’s Facebook activities, Rose Abrams decides it’s time to re-kindle the romance in their marriage with a cruise to the Greek Isles; celebrating their 25th anniversary. Sam Abrams hears the Siren’s song and jumps overboard, hoping to recapture the magic of his youth – and to finally write that “perfect” song which has been alluding him for over twenty-five years. Distracted by a battery powered game of solitaire, the Siren keeps Sam alive… for now. Will Sam escape the Siren’s spell and find his way back to Rose in New York City?
